Chapter 13

I caught up to the scurrying figure quickly enough, although he did not speak again, despite my best attempts to spark a conversation. Stymied by that approach, I pulled up my HUD.

Description: This is a non-playable character (NPC). Long ago, the city mice of Azaraz lived in peace and harmony in their subterranean demesnes. That all changed when the rat pack invaded. Now the city mice are no more, for they are country mice now. Doomed to wander the shadowy pockets of their once fertile valley.

New Side Quest: Restore the valley of Azaraz to the mice by defeating the evil rats.

A part of me had figured I’d have to do as much. While I mostly wasn’t looking forward to taking all those rats out, I was surprised to find that a part of me relished the challenge.

As bizarre and occasionally terrifying as this game might be, I was actually starting to enjoy it on some level. Maybe it was my turbocharged physique, or my squad of gorgeous companions. Hell, maybe it was just plain more exciting than being a tenured professor, not that I exactly had a boring life prior to this: after all, I was practically a real life Indiana Jones.

Albeit, with more paperwork and less action-adventure.

But, none of that could compare to what I was doing now. Fighting bad guys, saving mice villagers and kicking bad guy butt.

We’d exited the mushroom field and were making our way to the side of the cavern. The mouse was maybe four feet tall and just slightly plump. When he moved, his entire body shook with excitement. He’d shoot forward twenty feet, then pause and wait for me. While he waited, he’d lap at the back of his paws while his eyes darted frantically around.

I felt bad for the little guy. Part of me wanted to reach out and give him a hug.

Finally, we reached the crevasse wall. The mouse ran in parallel to it for some time, before darting into a tiny opening between the rock and the ground. His little face looked out at me.

“Are you coming?”

“Hold onto your horses,” I said.

I reached the hole and slid my feet inside. It was a narrow fit, but I just barely managed to make it. Tereti and Teretu slid down easily enough, although Lucy had some trouble fitting her busty figure through the hole.

It took a healthy amount of tugging on my part to get her down.

Finally, we were in. I swung around and faced the mouse. He stood off in a corner, rubbing his hands nervously.

I extended my palm. “Hello, name’s Lucas Wheelhouse. And you are?”

He examined my hand with evident disgust, as if it were going to strike out and bite him. I dropped it.

“I am Bermin,” he said. “Bermin the vermin, and you have brought a terrible retribution upon all of our heads.”

I had to stop myself from grinning at the name. “Woah, hold on there Bermin. What do you
